The LOCALITE KneeNavigator is a CT-less navigation system for knee
replacement (total and unicondylar prosthesis).
Determination of the Mechanical Axis
The essential prerequisite for an optimal implantation in total knee
arthroplasty is to align femur and tibia along the mechanical axis of
the
leg. Without a navigation system, this axis is determined from
preoperative data and is then transferred to the patient by means of
a template. Here the precision of the surgery depends largely
on the surgeon's experience and the patient's anatomy. In many cases,
the alignment along the mechanical axis is less than optimal.
CT-less Navigation Without Preoperative Planning
The LOCALITE KneeNavigator determines the leg's mechanical axis by
capturing the patient's kinematical data and anatomical landmarks that
provide a precise representation of the patient's anatomy. There is no
need for additional x-ray exposure or for time-consuming preoperative
planning based on CT images. The LOCALITE KneeNavigator acquires all the
data needed for an optimal implantation during the actual operation.
Software Customization to Individual Requirements With
the LOCALITE KneeNavigator the surgical procedure is identical to
conventional surgery, except for a few additional steps that are an
absolute must for navigation. The LOCALITE KneeNavigator can easily be
adapted to any type of prosthesis and also to the surgeon's individual
preferences. It does not force the surgeon to learn a specific
technique, but lets him compare each computer-supported step to his
normal routine. The surgeon may even continue to work with the methods
for orientation that he is accustomed to, and can use the navigation
system as an additional support. Thus, the LOCALITE KneeNavigator
assists the surgeon without detaching him from the actual operation.
Navigation for Minimally Invasive Unicondylar Implantation
The LOCALITE KneeNavigator can be extended to support navigation of
unicondylar prosthetics. A special set of instruments and additional
software provide navigation support for minimally invasive surgery.
Even here, no preoperative CT is needed; all relevant data are
acquired during the operation.

Open Platform for All Makes of Prostheses
The LOCALITE KneeNavigator is independent of endoprosthesis
manufacturers. It provides an open platform that lets the surgeon
choose from different makes of prostheses and still work with one and the
same navigation system. Hospitals that implant different brands of
prostheses need to invest in only one navigation system: LOCALITE
KneeNavigator.
